The Kind of Thumbnails You Can't Bite Anxiously
With today's job market being as competitive as it is it is important for applicants to set themselves apart from their competition in the initial application process. The easiest way to accomplish that is to design a creative resume that is simple and effective while also being memorable. Selling yourself on a piece of paper can be a difficult and overwhelming task but if you have a unique resume it will definitely aid you in the application process.
The thumbnails pictured above show several different approaches to resume design. The first is geared towards an applicant who has experience working in the professional music industry and utilizes the imagery of a vinyl record and a custom logo with their initials wrapped in a headphone silhouette. The second is a much more traditional design where the negative space absent of text is a nod to the classic argyle pattern that is common attire amongst working professionals. The next two thumbnails are focused more on atypical use of geometric shapes to break up the information contained in the resume while maintaining a clean and effective look. The thumbnail in the bottom left hand corner is an interpretation of the "road to success" where the "highway of life" flows diagonally down the page with the information in a flow chart indicating how the applicants education lead to experience which lead to the accumulation of marketable skills. The sixth and seventh thumbnail are again more classically styled resume's that utilize asymmetry with various types of lines directing your eye to the important information about the applicant. While the final thumbnail in the bottom right corner utilizes geometric repetition at the center to draw your attention while the information is is framed in around the outside corners of the resume.
Using bold design strategy is an effective way of communicating why an applicant is above the competition when selling themselves as a product on their resume, and can surely give them a leg up in the search for a job!
Jake,
ReplyDeleteThis resume shows great care in its design! Not only is it well drawn and visually stunning, the lines and shapes are set very intentionally to draw the viewers eye to the specific and important pieces of information about yourself and your experiences.
Constructive criticism, however, might ask why there is no other information present than your contact info, education, experience, and skills, and why it is repeated in every thumbnail. Each thumbnail should make up its part of the whole, rather than each being a resume unto itself.
Visually speaking, there is not much to critique here, the designs are stunning. The only nit-picks that can be given are for thumbnails 3 and 8, which create visual dissonance when compared to the other thumbnails. Rather than making geometrical sense, as the other thumbnails do, there are odd combinations of shapes that make the sections seem as though part of a separate document.
Other than that, the document is stunning and effective, a great piece of work.
Best,
Evan Atkins
Evan - please see the comment I made on your Thumbnail post. It is incorrect that each thumbnail is to be of a different aspect of the resumé. The assignment is to create 8 different thumbnail ideas for the entire resumé composition / layout. As stated in the video, in class, and the comparisons made between the class blog post with the thumbnail example and the optional poster thumbnails student could view
ReplyDeleteHey Jake - well-written assessment / critique of your work. Also, the thumbnails are well done - strong exploration of design and use of elements and principles. These are thoughtfully and smartly rendered; each is a separate solution to the design challenge of creating 8 different designs, with one goal – to create a resumé layout. Design 1 is specific to vinyl / dj (from the graphics you've developed), and the other 7 may be used for your final resumé, as you have creatively designed 7 layouts that may be not as specific as the first one, but able to be adapted for any resumé solution. These are well-done, and can be personalized further for your use. Excellent work!
